Prayer is a simple, honest conversation with God, not a performance or a list of fancy words. According to the Bible, you do not need to impress God with volume or length; He hears both silent thoughts (like Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:13) and spoken cries (like Jesus in John 17).
Why Is It Hard to Pray Out Loud?
- Fear of judgment and performance: We worry about sounding unpolished, repetitive, or foolish to others (or even feeling awkward alone).
- Vulnerability: Speaking your raw fears, grief, or desires out loud makes them feel real and exposes your inner state.
- Resistance from the flesh: Spiritual discipline often feels unnatural or heavy because it requires slowing down and stripping away pride.
What Must We Do to Pray?
- Go to a quiet place: Jesus taught in Matthew 6:6 to go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret.
- Be honest and simple: Avoid empty, repetitive phrases. Bring your real burdens, thanks, and needs.
- Use Scripture: Pray God’s own words back to Him from the Bible (such as the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6 or the Psalms) to anchor your heart and align with His will.
- Rely on the Spirit: When you don’t have the words, Romans 8:26 promises that the Spirit helps us in our weakness.
When quiet thoughts begin to stir,
And words feel tangled, weak, and blurred,
do i need a scripted speech?
Or lofty heights I cannot reach?
what do i say?
lord, please…
how do i pray?
Why does my voice so often shake?
Why does my heart begin to ache?
why do i fear the human ear,
And hide my trembling doubt and fear.
i trip on my words, i feel so small—
are you listening through it all?
In Matthew six,
the Master said:
Go find a quiet place instead,
Close the door, away from sight,
And speak to Him
in truth and light.
say all the things out loud
for there is power in the sound
so i obey
i pray
did you hear
what i had to say?
cause when i try and talk to you
all i hear
is ringing in my ears
my heart begins to pound
and the words i say
are no where to be found
why lord
why is it so
hard
to pray…
Why does my voice so often shake?
Why does my heart begin to ache?
why do i fear the human ear,
And hide my trembling doubt and fear.
i trip on my words, i feel so small—
are you listening through it all?
What must i do? his answer was no hard, it was not grand:
i Just open up
an empty hand?
you helped me
you showed me
how to Breathe in Your word,
and you let Scripture guide me
and i heard,
you helped me lay my heavy thoughts aside.
Whether a whisper in the night,
Or spoken out loud, so full of fright
My Father heard my humble plea—
i just talked to Him,
and i
was set free.
yes, lord, you set me free!!!!
so now even when voice begins to shake
even when my heart begins to ache
i no longer fear the human ear
And i no longer hide my trembling doubt and fear.
i speak the words inside my heart,
and yes, i still feel so small—
because now i know
Jesus is listening
through it all
yes father, you are here
and you always hear
my prayer
oh, father, you are here
and you always hear
my prayer
